Ariadne auf Naxos, Richard Strauss
Indianapolis Opera
Backstage havoc leading to onstage brilliance: the ultimate opera about opera. Strauss conjures a delightful two-part masterpiece, boasting some of the most delectable melodies to be found anywhere. This enchanting comic opera spoofs the Greek myth of Ariadne (King Minos' daughter) abandoned by Theseus (who slew the Minotaur) and pits characters from Italian commedia dell'arte against operatic stereotypes.
Featuring the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, conducted by James Caraher. Performed in German with easy-to-read translations projected above the stage. This production is part of Butler University's Mahler Project.
