Here’s What You Can Do:

  1. Check the information. Make sure you know the facts before writing letters, emails, or making phone calls and visits. Review the information on this site related to the city’s support, the programs, and their impact. If you have questions, let us know.
  2. Contact your elected officials. If you are not sure who your city councilor is, click here to find out. Let our government leaders know how important public support of the arts is to you. If you represent an organization receiving arts funding, your board members and patrons should contact their elected officials as well. All of your voices need to be heard in this process.
  3. Use the talking points. There are many statements in support of the city’s investment in the arts. Pick two or three main points that are most important to you. Relate personal stories and examples.
  4. Be realistic. There are tough fiscal issues and budgets are being reduced in all areas. Acknowledge and appreciate the difficult decisions our elected officials have and the challenges they face. Communicate that public support of the arts is important to you.
  5. Participate. There will be opportunities to attend budget hearings and to give public testimony. We will post those dates on this site as they are available. If you feel strongly about these issues, attend the hearings and speak up.
  6. Encourage others to support the arts. Engage in on-line discussions on the issues, for example, and other information-sharing activities.
  7. Be an advocate year-round. Invite elected officials to attend arts events and outreach programs throughout the year to see first-hand the great work that is being done in Indianapolis.
